Keeping your smile free from gum diseaseĀ

Periodontal (gum) disease is a degenerative oral condition that contributes to gum recession, tooth loss and bone loss when untreated. It has also been linked to a number of serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke, respiratory disease and pregnancy complications. Taking care of your gums is an essential part of your oral health, and Dr. Tim and his team provide treatments to help fight gum disease and keep your mouth healthy. These treatments include:

Periodontal disease develops when harmful bacteria contained in plaque accumulate on the teeth and attack your gums and other oral structures. This causes inflammation in the gum tissue and will eventually lead to permanent damage, such as gum recession and tooth loss. While gum disease can be halted and even reversed if diagnosed and treated early enough, the disease itself is not curable. Treatments work to keep periodontal disease under control and prevent further damage from occurring.

Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen and tender gums
  • Gum which bleed easily
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Teeth that look too long
  • Receding gums
  • Changes in your bite or the fit of oral appliances
  • Pus between the teeth

An essential part of periodontal maintenance involves visiting our office regularly for a professional cleaning. This visits generally occur every three months, and include thorough cleanings both above and below the gum line to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria. We provide these maintenance cleanings at three-month intervals because periodontal bacteria begin to flourish between three and twelve weeks. By providing a cleaning at the three-month (twelve week) mark, we can remove the harmful bacteria from your mouth and keep your gum disease under control.
